The recent heavy rain came through our roof at Shiloh and caused significant damage to our building.

Water poured into our dining area – one of the busiest and most important spaces at Shiloh. It’s where our guests share meals, take part in activities, access practical support and meet with the different organisations that work alongside us.

Thankfully, Shiloh is still open.

Our team has worked incredibly hard to make the building safe, minimise further damage and find ways to keep our services running. But there is a lot of work ahead to repair and restore the affected areas (see additional photos of the damage in the gallery linked above).

Our initial estimate for the affected section of the roof alone is around £50,000, with additional costs likely for the internal repairs and restoration.

We are working with our insurers and contractors to establish the full extent of the damage and what will be covered. In the meantime, we are asking our community to help us weather the storm.

This isn’t really about a roof. It’s about people.

Every year, hundreds of people come through Shiloh’s doors because they are homeless, at risk of homelessness or facing circumstances that make it difficult to cope alone.

For some, Shiloh means a hot meal, a shower or clean clothes.

For others, it means help finding somewhere safe to live, accessing healthcare, sorting out benefits, building new skills or connecting with specialist services.

Sometimes, it simply means having somewhere safe and welcoming to go, where someone knows your name, listens and treats you with dignity.

Our building makes all of this possible.

We don’t want to take money away from the people who need us.

The grants and donations we already receive aren't spare money. They pay for the people and resources that keep Shiloh running – our staff, food, essential supplies, activities, practical support and the everyday costs of being there for our guests.

We don't want to divert those funds into major building repairs if we can avoid it.

Doing so could ultimately mean less money available to support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

That’s why we’re asking our friends, supporters, local businesses, churches, community groups and the wider Rotherham community to stand alongside us and help raise the additional funds we need.

There’s a reason we chose this name for our appeal.

The recent heavy rain may have damaged our building, but weathering storms is something we see every day at Shiloh.

The people who come through our doors may be facing homelessness, poor health, financial hardship, isolation, unemployment, relationship breakdown or other difficult circumstances.

Whatever has brought someone to Shiloh, we meet them where they are, treat them with dignity and work alongside them to help them take their next steps towards a more secure and independent future.

We want to keep doing that.
