Story

We're hosting an online 'BBO 12 hour Bake off Bonanza' from 8am-8pm on Wednesday 18th November.

During the first national lockdown the BBO programme at hvoss moved activities online, finding ways to enable social engagement at a time when many were shielding and felt isolated. One of the ways we found to do so was through a weekly baking workshop. At the start many people had never baked before, were not IT literate and several are blind, so we had to support each other to find new ways of working together, be fully involved and stay connected, developing a sense of purpose and achievement. As we enter a second lockdown this event will celebrate all we have overcome and our continued commitment to support one another to promote mental well being and ease feelings of social isolation.

This event will raise funds for hvoss to keep all our staff working from home to support individuals and the Community sector across Herefordshire and specifically to pay for the publication of two new booklets written over lockdown. 1 / Stories from lockdown, Interviewing individuals and 2 / our BBO baking book, complete with recipes and photos. Both we hope will be important historical community documents as well as a celebration of the work our BBO participants and hvoss has achieved over lockdown and 2020.

Our fundraisers and 'star bakers' are all part of The Building Better Opportunities Project (BBO) at hvoss. This project supports people in to paid work, volunteering and training, through group work and 121 tailored support with employability and life skills as well confidence building activities. It is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund and The European Social Fund .

19 .11.202- WE DID IT! We completed a mammoth 13 hours of baking yesterday with 14 bakers and 20 visitors popping in and out of zoom to see how we were doing and cheering us on. Many thanks to all who donated and promoted the event. It was a real challenge but we all completed bakes of bread, lemon drizzle cake, jam tarts, shortbread, cheese scones, veg soup and vegan curry! Some of the participants donated their bakes to the food bank in Hereford. Well done everyone, a fabulous team effort.
