Around half the people who now use foodbanks had never used them before the pandemic hit. There is a growing number of families who are seeking support from food banks due to economic instability and adverse life challenges. On top of this, school closures are causing added anxiety and pressure to provide meals for children in families that are granted adequate support from other local services.
Ignite Life is currently providing meals to over 500 people, this is over 120 household. We are uniquely positions within our community and have close working relationships with the vast majority schools and key local authority departments across the greater Bristol region and Impact Mentoring which means we are ideally placed to identify families that are 'in need' and 'at risk' and provide essential services.
We want to constantly expand out service to reach more people so that no family or individual goes hungry. Since April 2020, we have delivered food to individuals on over 14,000 occasions: this is in excess of 55,000 meals. Research has shown that throughout the UK, foodbanks are predicted to deliver six emergency food parcels a minute this winter.
Our project also promotes environmental sustainability as we have prevented over 100 tonnes of food from reaching landfill. We are proud that we have been able to support so many people at during such a difficult period of our history. Demand is increasingly daily and unfortunately we think it will continue to do so over the months ahead.
