Story

WASP is for 4 -11-year olds, who need a safe place to play, make and meet friends and gain skills out of school hours. We help parents to be able to work through affordable childcare, and offer some free places for children with complex needs. Up to 36 children attend each session, some of who have additional needs including emotional or behavioural difficulties.

A key part of our work is raising confidence and aspirations, and ensuring achievements are recognised but above all ensuring the children have a good time.

In addition to being at the club, we organise visits and trips so children experience the wider world around them through activities such as swimming, apple picking and rock pooling.

WASP is based on Playwork Principles. A range of games, play equipment, art and craft materials, a quiet corner and food and drinks are available for children to choose from at each session. Staff ensure the children are all engaged in activities and are interacting with each other in a kind and friendly manner.

WASP has a large bright indoor space and we make full use of the outdoor space and gym to encourage each child to spend some of their time engaged in physical activity. The children also visit a local woodland and orchard space where they learn woodcraft skills.

Our programmes of activities and the toys we buy are planned with the children. We ensure activities are affordable and relevant to local people. Our staff ratios are high to ensure we provide the best possible care. WASP is respected and integrated into the school and wider community.
