Story

Twice in the last week, the Rwenzori Region in Uganda has been hit by very heavy rainfall, particularly in the early hours of Thursday, 7th May 2020. Four rivers flowing from the mountains have overflowed their banks causing massive flooding.

Neighbouring Kilembe Hospital has been largely destroyed, and all patients and staff have had to be evacuated. Some of the patients have been transferred the forty miles to Kagando Hospital.

The following has been posted in a local WhatsApp group: Thousands of our people are suffering in camps at various public institutions with nothing to eat, eat on, put on, cover with, etc.

Very many in the community have lost their homes, crops have been devastated, some bridges destroyed, others made unsafe and, as is so often the case, it is the poor who are suffering the most. Many have sought shelter in refugee camps.

Friends of Kagando have set up an emergency relief fund to provide help for those affected by the floods particularly for patients and their attendants, staff, students and their families at Kagando who have lost so much. The fund will be administered by a trusted team at Kagando who will ensure that money given will go to those most in need
