Story
All Saints Church Lindfield are supporting and raising money for the Kagando Hydro Electric Power scheme. Kagando Hospital and the Kagando Rural Development Centre ("KARUDEC") are one of our Mission Partners and as a church we have been supporting them for over forty years.
The hospital previously had a hydro-electric scheme with a small dam which was built over 30 years ago but this was not able to cope with the increasing demands for electricity in the hospital over the years so when the National Grid brought mains electricity to the area the hospital was connected to it.
Unfortunately, the mains electricity is unreliable and there are very frequent power cuts which are dangerous for patients in many critical areas of the hospital and also very inefficient and expensive for the hospital because emergency diesel generators need to be used regularly.
The aims of the new Hydro scheme are:
1. To support the ministry of Kagando hospital and KARUDEC. The hospital needs a reliable electricity supply to enable it to function safely and efficiently
2. To help the hospital reduce its costs and make a significant step towards self-sufficiency.
Fundraising is tricky during this time of COVID. We had been planning a sponsored walk for June 2020 which obviously we could not get off the ground. Instead, members of the congregation will walk the equivalent of the length of the pipe needed for the hydro scheme, every day during January 2021. The water will need to be piped 2.5kms from the mountain stream to the powerhouse. After powering the turbines, it will return into the river.
