Story

Welcome, I am Micky Hazard, ex-professional footballer, who played for Tottenham, Chelsea, Swindon and England.

As some of you may be aware, my sister lost her 23 year old son, who took his own life due to mental illness.

Too many people today are taking their own lives and feel they have no one to talk to, or no one is Listening, or no one will help. We want them to know that we are all ready to talk listen and help, because we care.

We are there for you all, and my sister and I have joined forces to hopefully help people who suffer be more aware that there are people out there that will help that will talk and will listen.

We are looking to put benches in all the local parks, where people can go and sit in their dark moments, and have telephone numbers on plaques placed on the benches, to let them know that you can call these numbers at any time, and the people on the other end of the call will be ready to talk, listen and help.

On Friday 3rd March 2023, in Peterborough at the Steve Perryman night, we raised over £1300 to put towards our first bench in loving memory of my nephew Jay (thank you to everyone that donated, each bench costs quite a lot of money). We want to let people suffering know that there’s always someone ready to listen and you are not alone.

Our first bench will be placed in the local park in Sawbridgeworth, which was where his house was, where Jay took his own life. It is planned to be installed on 28th February 2024, the anniversary of this tragic event.

Mental illness can hit anyone at anytime, and can leave behind such devastating impact on family and friends. We need to do more as a country to first of all understand what it is and the impact it can have.

Life is precious and just as a heart problem requires help to save, a life so does mental illness, and we need to be there to help. My message to you all out there today suffering with this horrible illness, is please talk please seek help, you are not alone, let someone know how you are feeling, we can help.

Since announcing our intentions in early March this year, a collective of people have come together and created this charity to help grow the initiative at a country level, by fundraising and developing stategies to make this possible.

Thank you all for reading, we really appreciate your time. We will keep you all up to date with our progress and pictures of our first bench and many more thereafter.

Think of it this way, if everyone in the country donated £1, that would be enough to put a bench in every park in the country, a bench that could save lives, a bench that would give suffering people a place to go and talk to someone who cares, and to know they are not alone.

Thank you,

Micky xxx

About the charity

Legend on the Bench is a charity set up to try and reduce the number of mental health issues and suicides in the UK, by installing benches in public spaces, discreetly inscribed with contact information for support organisations that are accessed by QR code or the Legend on the Bench website. Our Ambassador Micky Hazard (an ex-professional footballer) was personally affected by the sudden suicide of his 23 year old nephew in 2019, and with his sister Michelle, started the journey to raise awareness and provide facilities, along with local council support, so that other individuals and families could get the help required before experiencing a similar tragedy. All funds raised go towards the production and installation of these Legend Benches with the aim to have one in every town or city throughout the UK
