Story
We want to ensure that the College experience is truly open to all, including those who may face financial challenges in achieving their ambition of postgraduate study. COVID-19 has changed the landscape for further study and, whilst our commitment to access was already strong, now that we are seeing more Members struggling to make ends meet, we are determined to maintain and expand our emergency financial assistance programme, the Mecklenburgh Fund.
For many of our Members, financial challenges can occur unexpectedly and that is why the Mecklenburgh Fund is so important; it entirely removes significant burdens, pressures or stresses thatmay otherwise take Members away from focusing on their studies and enjoyment of all that Goodenough has to offer. It enables us to support Members as much as we can during their time with us and extends our pastoral care package; something ever more important to students in these challenging times.
In academic year 2020/21, and as a result of the difficulties brought by the pandemic, we have seen an increased need for emergency financial assistance. Where students have no longer been supported by family members, who have lost employment, or in instances where Members have been unable to take on part-time work, teaching or other income generating activities, more and more have needed additional help to cover basic need. Between December 2020 and December 2021, we have awarded Members with a total of almost £90,000 in Mecklenburgh Fund grants. This has represented 66 grants and an average award of around £1,250.
That's why we are asking our five Team Goodenough runners to raise £250 each in sponsorship so we can provide financial to support to a Member in financial diffciutly, allowing them to reach their potential and make the most of their Goodenough experience.
