Story

Why We Run: Fighting for Every Heartbeat

High cholesterol is a silent threat. It affects nearly 1 in 2 adults in the UK and is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and vascular dementia. Most people don’t even know they have it — until it’s too late.

At HEART UK – The Cholesterol Charity, we’re on a mission to change that. And this year, our amazing #TeamHEARTUK is taking on the London Marathon 2026 to raise awareness, fund our lifesaving work, and keep more hearts running.

Meet Our Marathon Heroes

From first-time runners to seasoned athletes, every member of our team has a story. Many are running in memory of loved ones lost to heart disease. Others are doing it for their children, friends, and families living with inherited conditions like familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH).

Each stride they take helps fund:

Expert cholesterol advice for people at risk

Public awareness campaigns

Education for healthcare professionals

Advocacy for earlier diagnosis and better care

Hear From #TeamHEARTUK 2025

“Thank you for such an incredible experience. It’s been life changing – from the training to race day, and seeing how amazing the volunteers, organisers and charities are. I’m in awe.

I think the way you’ve looked after us as a running group has been first class. The class of family 25 feels like a real family.

Thank you again for such an amazing opportunity – I’ve got the bug.”

– Dr Jamie Whitehouse, #TeamHEARTUK 2025

“Thanks so much for the opportunity – I may reach out to do it again! (Against my better judgement)

I had a great time for most of the run – it got tough towards the end, but it’s not meant to be easy!

The HEART UK cheer point just before Tower Bridge was brilliant – and the crowds the whole way round were incredible.

So pleased to be part of the team raising money for a super important cause.”

– Andy, #TeamHEARTUK 2025
