Story

Thank you for supporting #TeamMartlets.

Martlets is a local charity providing essential care to people affected by terminal illness in Brighton and Hove, and surrounding areas. Our expert teams provide the very best care and support, helping patients and their loved ones to live life to the full during the precious time they have together.

Mum had cancer and spent her last days in Martlets’ inpatient unit in 2014. I know it sounds like a cliché, but there was one particular nurse there who really was like an angel – just so gentle and attentive to my mum, making sure she was as comfortable as she possibly could be. I have run a number of marathons to raise money for Martlets, where she spent her final days. It feels fitting to do a really big challenge 10 years later to mark the anniversary. So I'll be running the Brighton and London marathons and also the Ultra 100k from London to Brighton.

Most people receive care from us in their own homes. Others choose to spend their final days on our inpatient unit, or to join us as inpatients for respite care or symptom management. Outpatients also visit our hospice for pain relief, physiotherapy, counselling, welfare advice and social activities.

How does the money you raise make a difference?

Martlets care is free thanks to the support of local people, businesses, and trusts. An NHS grant covers a portion of our costs, but we rely on the community to fund most of our vital services. From terminal cancer and end-stage heart disease to neurological conditions such as Parkinsons, Alzheimers, and Motor Neurone Disease, were here to help.
