Story

Two days. Two hundred miles. Two important causes.

On 14 and 15 June 2024, 18 parents and friends of St Mary Magdalens Primary school will cycle from the school gates in Mortlake in south west London to Bruges in Belgium to raise awareness and funds for both the school and cancer research.

How will your donation support the fight against cancer?

A portion of what we raise will be given to The Eve Appeal, a charity focused on raising awareness of, and sponsoring research to prevent and detect, five common cancers that affect women. This charity has been chosen to honour the memory of a beloved member of our school community. Hear more about how The Eve Appeal is doing research to ensure the women in our lives have a better chance of a cancer-free life:

How will your donation help the pupils at St Mary Magdalens?

The playground and outdoor learning areas at any school are spaces in which children spend a lot of their time. They are key to their physical and emotional wellbeing. That is why our parent teacher association (PTA) is committed to supporting our school's vision to transform these spaces. While this is a long-term project, your donation will support the first stage of the plan which includes things such as:

- improving the playground used exclusively for our Reception class, who spend much of their day in play-based learning

- repainting the lines for the sports court (football and netball), which is used both for PE lessons and extracurricular activities

- replacing raised soft surfaces that are worn down with a new fit-for-purpose surface

Your donation will also help make the longer term aim of a complete redevelopment of our outdoor spaces a reality. These types of projects are a great fit for funding from trusts, foundations and government agencies, but these funding bodies almost always want to see that part of the money has already been raised. The more we can raise from this ride, the more chance we have to unlock additional funding.
