Story

This is our 2025 onward donation page...our charity has to raise circa £350,000 annually through grants & donations to support the work we do. Your help doing this through gifts and donations is very much appreciated.

Imagine an unexpectedly high bill arrives and you suddenly realise that you don’t have enough money to buy food this month. Or, slowly, over a period of time, your money is running out and your bills keep coming in and you are faced with the choice of paying for heating or eating this month? What would you do, and where would you go for help and support? Family? Friends? What if they are in the same boat?

This is where the idea of a foodbank was born, out of trying to help a family facing an unexpected crisis, and standing with them, providing emergency food, until things got back under control.

Sadly, the march of poverty in the UK is relentlessly marching on, drawing more and more families into its grasp. Most people, if a crisis hit, would find themselves within 2 months of needed a foodbank, and in Middleton this is no exception.

Middleton Central Foodbank was set up in 2014 to ‘stand in the gap’ for people experiencing short-term crisis. Currently the numbers of people needing emergency food support remains stubbornly high as people are increasingly impacted by the ongoing cost-of-living squeeze, and more and more people are drawn into financial hardship.

In 2024, the foodbank gave out the equivalent of 74,300 meals to people. We supported over 670 families comprising 1773 adults and 1076 children, so, nearly 2,850 supported in total.

We received donations of 28 tonnes of food from local groups, and individuals, and gave out 31.2 tonnes in our emergency food parcels. To help you visualise this 1 tonne is about the same weight as a fully grown dairy cow, or polar bear. So that’s a lot of food that comes in and goes out throughout the year, for which we are immensely grateful.

The money that you give to us will help us to buy additional food supplies, and to contribute towards the running of the foodbank.

You can also help us by being a fundraiser yourself, organising sponsored events and activities that you can link to this campaign, or you could organise a food collection amongst your friends, family, or work colleagues.

Thank you for helping us to help others.
