Story
2026 is the 20th Anniversary of the Mind and Soul Choir.
The Mind and Soul choir is a group of service users, carers and staff from Camberwell who meet weekly at the canteen in the Maudsley Hospital to sing together toimprove their mental well-being. We use singing and songwriting as a tool to aid positive mental health.
Mental health issues can strike anyone, but in Southwark, where the choir is based it is estimated that almost one in five adults in Southwark are experiencing a common mental disorder, equating to approximately 47,000 individuals so there is a great need. As one of our members says, "when I sing it feels like topping up my oyster card for the week.....without the benefits of singing, I don't know how to mentally face the week.....by coming I am recharged and ready for the week has to throw at me". The benefits of singing for mental health issues are widely researched and include reducing cortisol associated with stress, aiding good breath techniques as well as forming social connections.
