Story

MJS Berlin to London

The MJS Berlin to London cycle will take us west through Germany and across The Netherlands, then by ferry to the UK before cycling on to London. Passing through rural countryside, small towns and villages, there are always new sights to enjoy and motivate us to keep turning the pedals. We’ll be averaging about 100 miles a day to raise vital funds for The Institute of Cancer Research, London (ICR).

The motivation to create this challenge comes from Mike Southgate (MJS). Mike was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic bowel cancer in April 2020 and fought against it for almost 2 years before passing away aged 59 in January 2022. He was a fantastic man with a highly selfless attitude toward life and others. He wanted to participate in a trial to help clinicians gain further understanding into advanced bowel cancer, more so than to help his own illness, which is why we have decided to continue to support the ICR.

Our previous fundraising efforts for the ICR centre upon the London to Paris cycle challenge in 2022. This time round we have decided to up the ante and double the distance! We are hoping that via the Berlin to London cycle, we can bring cyclists and non-cyclists together in this exciting but difficult challenge, as well as create a chance for those who have been affected by cancer in some way, to come together and make a positive difference.

Help make the discoveries that defeat cancer

The ICR is one of the world's most influential cancer research institutes. Their 800-strong body of scientists and clinicians based in laboratories in Chelsea and Sutton are working on a broad spectrum of research, from understanding the underlying biological causes of cancer through to designing and testing the latest cutting-edge therapies.

In the last 100 years, their discoveries have played an important role in shaping modern understanding of cancer and how it can be treated. They identified many of the cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke; discovered a number of the early chemotherapies; and established that damage to DNA is the basic cause of cancer.

Today, they lead the world in revealing the genetic diversity and complexity of cancer, and exploiting these findings to develop new and better treatments. Their research, is making a real impact on cancer patients’ lives.

They couldn’t have come this far without the support of people like you, who have helped fund their ground-breaking work.

Help them reach the finishing line. Together, we can finish cancer.
