Run the Great North Run for Bulls Wheelchair Rugby Club

Help support NE Bulls WRC through the Great North Run 2026. Every donation helps us provide opportunities for disabled athletes to take part in wheelchair rugby, covering equipment, venue hire, coaching and competition costs.

Great North Run 2026 · 13 September 2026 ·

Wheelchair Rugby was first created as a sport for people with Spinal Cord Injuries who were not physically functional enough to play other disability sports such as Wheelchair Basketball. All players at the NE Bulls WRC have impairments or disabilities effecting both their arms and legs meaning they struggle with a lot of day to day tasks. Wheelchair Rugby is a sport that they are able to compete in equally and is adapted to their limited function. The Bulls are one of two clubs in the north-east and first established in 2002. The club can be described as a lifeline for some of its members as without the provision of this sport, some members would be completely inactive. The NE Bulls WRC would like to make the sport as accessible as possible for those with a disability and as such have decided to raise funds on an annual basis in order to purchase wheelchairs which can be used by new players when they join the club. As a Charity, any funds raised by the club are used to further the clubs objective - the relief of disabled people by the promotion of disability sport and in particular Wheelchair Rugby in County Durham, Teesside & North Yorkshire. The charity’s main purpose is to play wheelchair rugby in accordance with the rules of the sport (including rules for any discipline of the sport) as set out by the World Wheelchair Rugby (WWR) and/or by Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby Ltd (GBWR).

Story

We are Mary-Jane and Paul, and this year we are proud to be taking on the Great North Run 2026 in support of the North East Bulls Wheelchair Rugby Club.

We both work as nurses on a Trauma and Orthopaedic Ward, caring for patients with injuries, mobility challenges, and long recovery journeys. Every day, we see first-hand the courage, determination, and resilience it takes to overcome physical and emotional obstacles. Those experiences inspire us both professionally and personally, and they are a big part of why we have chosen to support the North East Bulls.

Mary-Jane's Story

Originally from the Philippines, I have been working as a nurse in the UK for the past eight years. Supporting patients through their recovery journeys is something I am deeply passionate about, and it is incredibly rewarding to see people regain their confidence and independence after injury.

Running started as a hobby, but it has become a vital part of my life. It has helped me build resilience, strengthen my mental wellbeing, and navigate life's challenges. Through running, I have discovered what can be achieved with determination, consistency, and belief in yourself.

As someone who works closely with patients facing injuries and mobility challenges, I am continually inspired by the strength they show every day. That is why supporting the North East Bulls Wheelchair Rugby Club means so much to me. Their commitment, team spirit, and refusal to let barriers define them are truly inspiring.

Paul's Story

As a Staff Nurse on a Trauma and Orthopaedic Ward, I am passionate about helping patients recover from injury and supporting them on their journey back to health. Witnessing the resilience shown by patients every day has given me a deep appreciation for the power of determination and community.

Alongside my love of football, running has become an important part of my life. It helps me stay physically fit, manage the demands of a busy healthcare role, and maintain my mental wellbeing. I am also grateful to share this passion with my partner, Mary-Jane, whose encouragement inspired me to embrace running and a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Taking part in the Great North Run is both a personal challenge and an opportunity to celebrate the values that the North East Bulls represent: courage, perseverance, teamwork, and inclusion.

Why We're Running

The North East Bulls Wheelchair Rugby Club provides opportunities for athletes to compete, grow in confidence, and be part of a supportive and inspiring community. Their athletes demonstrate every day that potential is not limited by physical challenges, but driven by determination, hard work, and spirit.

On race day, we will be running not just for ourselves, but for everyone who has shown resilience in the face of adversity. We are running to support an incredible club, celebrate the power of sport, and help ensure that more people can benefit from the opportunities and community that wheelchair rugby provides.

Every donation, no matter the size, will help make a difference.

Thank you for your support.
