Story

Join our community of fundraisers - help drive vital research forward

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. In the UK, it claims the lives of 80,000 women every year.

Yet women are still underdiagnosed and undertreated - especially after pregnancy.

At Wellbeing of Women, we fund pioneering research that transforms the lives of women, girls, and babies. This work wouldn’t happen without the support of our incredible community of fundraisers.

Now, we’re asking our community to come together to raise £10,000, by the end of 2025, to help support vital research like a current study led by Dr Laura Ormesher at the Manchester University Maternal and Fetal Health Research Centre.

What Your Fundraising Could Help Support

Dr Ormesher’s study investigates heart health after preterm pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication that causes high blood pressure and premature birth and can increase a woman’s risk of future heart disease by up to eight times.

Postnatal care is too often overlooked, despite being one of the highest-risk times for women. It’s a crucial window for heart health recovery and prevention: a chance to reduce disease, tackle inequalities, and close the gender gap in cardiovascular care. - Dr Laura Ormesher

With your support, the team can:

• Expand the study to include more participants

• Test heart health markers in stored blood samples

• Improve postnatal care and reduce fatal future health risks

My research aims to transform how we care for women after pregnancy, turning the postnatal period into an opportunity to protect lifelong heart health.

In time, this research will grow to include all women with high blood pressure in pregnancy, a condition affecting 1 in 10 pregnancies, helping to address a major population-level health burden.

❤️ Why This Research Matters

• Pre-eclampsia is linked to heart disease, premature birth, and neonatal death.

• High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks and strokes.

• Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, claiming the lives of 80,000 women each year in the UK.

• For many women, pregnancy is their first major interaction with the healthcare system making the postnatal period a vital time to identify risks and offer preventative care.

Understanding how postnatal heart and blood vessel changes relate to future health will improve how we counsel and support women after a complicated pregnancy - focusing interventions on what truly matters.

This study will help close the gap in women’s heart health and lay the foundation for new treatments, safer pregnancies, and better long-term outcomes.
