Help us buy a home for the homeless

Organised by Just Homes

The Cumberland Road house currently houses 5 single homeless men. It is now on the market to be sold. This appeal is to raise enough money to buy the property so that those men and anyone else who walks through our doors do not become homeless again.

Just Homes is a charity providing accommodation and support to the homeless whom are longer term unemployed and/or with a history of drug or alcohol use. We provide one to one support to our clients. We are meeting them where they are at their lives and help gather themselves together, take steps towards integrating back into society. We support them to take up employment or employment related training and move on to more permanent accommodation. This is a place where they take steps to transform their lives.

Story

Who we are...

We are a London based charity providing accommodation-based support to the homeless. We provide one to one support to our clients to take up employment or employment related training and move on to more permanent accommodation. This is a place where they could transform their lives. Our typical accommodation comprises of a use of a single room within a shared house. Most importantly, we provide friendships and belonging to those who are lonely and desperate. We become their new family.

50% of our clients take up employment or employment related training. Less than 1% goes back to the street.

Our appeal...

Just Homes has the use of 7 properties across Newham with a capacity to support 60 clients at a time. The property in question is a 5-bed room house that currently houses single men. The land lord had given us the use of the property at a subsidised rent for over 18 years. The property is now on the market and we will not be able to lease a property of a similar size or keep up monthly mortgage repayments with the limited resources we currently have.

If we don't raise enough money to buy the property by the 1st of April 2019, all the residents will become street homeless once again.

Why you should give to us...

We are one of the few charities in Newham, who have survived the recession and are quietly working in the back ground, providing support for the most vulnerable of our society.

We do not get any government grants to support our work. Finding landlords who are willing to lease properties to house the homeless is not easy. We cannot afford to pay the high commercial rent charges. The start-up investment costs involved to license the property to be a house in multiple occupancy are very high and is not cost effective unless we have use of the property for 7 to 10 years. Landlords are not willing to commit to that length of lease, especially to accommodate homeless single men.

It is yet another challenge to find neighbourhoods where people are willing to have a hostel set up for the Homeless as they are afraid of the value of their properties falling and oppose the planning permission for use.

Newham is facing a crisis in street homelessness. At a point in time when the demand for our service is at its highest we are standing to loose even the provision we have.
