Visit the charity's profileAt Aberlour we work with vulnerable children and young people across Scotland every day. We help families facing significant, often multiple, challenges.
We try to provide help as early as possible.
For so many of the children and families we work with the problems they face are the result of, or worsened by, poverty.
We see children and families suffering extreme hardship every day. Often, they lack basic necessities like warm clothes and bedding.
*Ben is five. Every week, Ben and Daddy visit Mummy in hospital. Mummy is very sick and won't ever come home.
During lockdown, Ben swapped his school uniform for his pyjamas. Daddy says it's fun and more important that Ben has food in his tummy than lots of clothes.
Now school is back, Ben is still wearing his summer jacket and shoes.
1 in 4 children in Scotland are living in poverty. Many families have been plunged into unforeseen hardship due to COVID-19. And it's impacting children's education.
If it's wet, the children still go out and eat and we still do PE outside. But, parents can't afford to properly equip their children. There's still summer shoes, no waterproofs; no appropriate clothing to keep them warm and dry. Parents are reluctant to send children to school on wet days because they can't afford to provide a change of clothing. So, now we're seeing absence." Headteacher
At Aberlour, we make it our priority to respond to the worst effects of poverty on children and families.
Our family services provide practical and emotional support to those who are struggling. We work with them on what is important - helping them to budget and supporting them to communicate with other agencies that can provide money and welfare advice.
Your support means Aberlour can be there for vulnerable children, like Ben, when they need us most.
Thank you!
