Out of the Blues mission is to support cutting-edge research into mood disorders with the goal of increasing understanding of, and improving treatment for, these conditions.

Mood disorders have a devastating impact on peoples lives, impacting their families and all of society. The lifetime risk of depression is around 35% and depression significantly increases the risk of suffering from physical illnesses including heart disease and diabetes. Mood disorders are associated with a significantly increased risk of suicide with it being the leading cause of death in young adults.

While mental illness accounts for around 19% of the total burden of all diseases (compared to 16% for cancer), it receives only 5% of UK research funding (compared to 20% for cancer).

Your donation will help to improve the lives of patients and develop our research in many ways. Here are three exemplar potential studies:

1. Improving sleep and cognition in bipolar

2. New treatment option for depression

3. A CALMing App for young people with bipolar

The objective of the charity is to facilitate and enhance research into Mood Disorders by researchers based in the North of England. Funding to teams of researchers can include individuals with other affiliations but must consist of at least one based within Newcastle University. The research can be of any nature as long as it meets the vision and values of the Charity.
