On Saturday 29th April 2023, six eight-person crews from different Oxford colleges will attempt to complete a fundraising marathon row from the OUBC Boathouse in Wallingford, back to the College Boathouses in Oxford! The crews taking on the challenge are:
Trinity College (2 boats, 1 trinity and 1 composite with Wadham)
Worcester College
New College (2 boats)
Lady Margaret Hall (1 boat)
Wadham College
The crews will row as a pair of boats navigating seven locks between Wallingford and Oxford: Benson, Days, Clifton, Culham, Abingdon, Sandford and Iffley. It is envisaged that the event will take approx. six hours to complete subject to conditions!
The aim of this event is for each crew to raise £1,200 in sponsorship which will support a junior bursary position at Fulham Reach Boat Club (FRBC). Each bursary place will
give a young person, who ordinarily wouldn't be able to continue to row due to financial constraints, free junior membership and access to rowing sessions for a year.
Rowing for our students this year has had a great effect. It allows me to engage with students who can otherwise be disengaged in the classroom and build positive relationships with them. My favourite part of this year was when a year 10 student came up to tell me that he had brought his family down to the river one weekend to show them it. His family moved to London a few years ago and live nearby in Hammersmith, but had never walked down to see the river nor knew how close and beautiful it was. He was really happy that he was able to teach his family about the river and share this with them and really proud to tell me about this too. Teacher - Chelsea Academy
Fulham Reach Boat Club (FRBC) has a unique vision to improve lives through rowing by providing Rowing for All. They aim to give access to rowing to a cross-section of the community, especially those who are most in need because of financial hardship or social circumstance and help them realise their full potential both on and off the water. Specifically, they give every pupil in participating state schools the opportunity to learn to row and compete whilst teaching them the true meaning of teamwork, focus and confidence, provide rowing bursaries for young people to join their junior membership, tackle food insecurity over the long summer holiday, help reduce the reoffending rate of serving prisoners and give the local community access to the river.
Award winning in 2020 as British Rowing's Club of the Year and Project of the Year and proud winners of British Rowing's Club of the year again in 2021. In 2022 they won Hammersmith and Fulham's Inclusive Project of the Year award for their State School Rowing project which saw 12,231 pupil places granted out on the water.
FRBC is a rowing club with a difference, it goes above and beyond to level the playing field and make rowing accessible, particularly to those most in need.
