The National Literacy Trust empower people with the literacy skills they need to succeed in life. They work in the UK's most disadvantaged communities where as many as one in three people have low levels of literacy skills, providing the support, resources and training needed to empower more children with the literacy skills they need to succeed.
At Penguin Random House, we’ve set ourselves an ambitious challenge of taking part in the 25km Peak District Ultra Challenge in aid of the National Literacy Trust, because we are passionate about ending the cycle of poverty and low literacy.
Every donation will help the National Literacy Trust to transform the life stories of children living in the most disadvantaged areas of the UK through literacy.
On average, children from the poorest backgrounds start school 19 months behind other children.
Children without these skills will be held back at every stage of their lives. They are:
- Five times more likely to fail to meet the expected standards in English at age 11
- Four times more likely to struggle to read as adults
- Twice as likely to be unemployed aged 34
- Three times more likely to have mental health problems as adults.
