Annually over 1.6 million people in the UK are estimated to be directly affected by eating disorders. Our referrals have grown from 15 sufferers to over 70 per month since the Covid-19 pandemic began. PEDS (Personalised Eating Disorder Support) has treated over 200 sufferers in the last year. Our mission is to provide nurse led, personalised eating disorder support to help the sufferer manage their eating disorder. To build a life to get well for which is not controlled by their illness. We equip carers and families with the tools to be able to support their loved ones. Whilst we understand the importance of hope, we also acknowledge the realities of the challenge when fighting eating disorders. In sharing our determination, passion and skills, we help strengthen our sufferers, their loved ones and the professionals we work alongside. Let's win the battle against eating disorders. Service User Story PEDS made me realise what was happening to me, they showed me that there was a light at the end of the really gloomy tunnel! I had weekly blood tests, weigh in’s, meetings with PEDS and adult mental health services. It was a whirlwind away from what I had been used to! I honestly couldn’t have done it without PEDS.

Story

We would like to help the 1.6 million people directly affected by eating disorders (EDs) in the UK. Our mission is to provide nurse led, personalised eating disorder support (PEDS) that helps the sufferer to manage their eating disorder and prevent hospitalisation. To help sufferers and those who have been discharged from hospital, to build a life to get well for which is not controlled by their illness. This includes equipping carers and families with the tools to be able to support their loved ones.

We would like to offer more flexible appointment times and out of hours for our patients so that they can get the help they need when they need it. £20 funds a supportive phone call and £40 pays for a 1:2:1 session with a sufferer or loved one.

We would like to offer professional training to organisations and schools in the community. Working on the prevention of eating disorders and not just the cure. The training costs between £200-£300 depending on the duration. We wish to give greater support to carers and their families. We have been facilitating parents and carers support groups as we understand that caring for a loved one with an eating disorder can be exhausting. We know how much the help and support of a carer supports recovery, and this is invaluable.

We want to be able to rapidly respond to the surge in referrals up from 15 per month to 60 per month since the start of Covid-19. We want to reduce the mortality rate of eating disorders, reduce hospital admissions, and provide a respite house for sufferers of eating disorders and their families which would cost £1,000,000 to build.

PEDS is an inclusive organisation serving people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientation in our community. The local communities of Peterborough and Cambridgeshire would continue to benefit from this project. Essex, Leeds, and London are interested in launching our services in their region and we wish to help them facilitate this but require more funding to expand.

We have helped over 200 sufferers in the last year, but referrals have increased from 15 to 60 per month. We have had to make the decision to only work with adults over 16 as we do not have the capacity to take on any more patients. We would like to return to assisting these young eating disorder sufferers with your help. There were 4,962 admissions for eating disorders for children aged 18 and under in 2019-20 in the UK, a 19% increase from the 4,160 admissions seen in 2017-18. We really need to help to reduce the staggering numbers of children being admitted to hospital through early intervention and education.
