Story
Type 1 Diabetes is an incurable condition that strikes indiscriminately, normally between the ages of 5 - 15. If untreated, it is fatal.
For the last few years, Kate Nye has helped teach two young people who have the condition at a school in the Lake District. During the school day, she helps them manage their diabetes, making sure they are regularly injecting insulin and testing their blood sugar levels. The medication that her students take is free on the NHS.
But there are parts of the world where young children, just like her students, do not have access to the Type 1 Diabetes medication and sadly do not survive. When Kate learned this, she decided to try and do something to help.
Inspired by the enthusiasm and energy of her pupils, Kate signed up for the London2Paris bike ride in support of Action4Diabetics (A4D). However, COVID-19 damaged her plans and, instead, Kate is aiming to raise money through a virtual challenge: Penrith2Paris and she needs your help!
On the weekend of June 27 and 28, we aim to cover 900km from Penrith2Paris on a virtual fundraising #Mission4Type1 as a team. You can find sign up information here: Sign UP! Penrith2Paris: Kate Nye's Virtual #mission4type1
Kate aims to raise £2000, enough to support four children for a whole year with essential Type 1 Diabetes medication.
A4D is a charity that supports disadvantaged people who have Type 1 Diabetes in South-East Asia. For £30 a month, they can provide life-saving medication (insulin and blood testing equipment) and developmental support to a child with the condition.
A4D currently support over 450 young people across six countries in South-East Asia.
