Story

How Peter's Fund made a difference to Mark

Established in memory of our late colleague Peter Richards, who sadly passed away in 2020. Peter's Fund helps vulnerable people including those with multiple disadvantage who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless across Leeds.

Peter worked for housing and homelessness charities for over 30 years and dedicated his working life to making a positive difference in people's lives. For the last 3 years of his life, Peter was the service manager at Engage Leeds a city-wide housing support service, helping the people of Leeds with preventing homelessness, sustaining tenancies and helping integrate them into the community.

From the initial donations made by friends and family of Peter, to the annual Peter Richards Memorial Football Tournament, Peter's Fund has raised over £4,000. This has enabled us to provide vital resources, including laptops and other tech for people to complete training courses, seek employment and receive counselling online, clothes for families and children, transport for people to get to vital appointments and delivery charges for household essentials such as cookers, washing machines and other white goods.

Your donation will help us continue this work. Below are some of the ways your kind support can help us help the most vulnerable in our society.

£5 will provide a day-rider bus fare that would help a homeless person keep an important appointment (such as with Housing Advice, or the Job Centre)

£20 will buy some basic essentials for a person moving into a new home for the first time to help make it feel like home

£50 will pay the delivery costs for a donated cooker and fridge

“Peter’s fund is always a safety net for me when I am working with vulnerable people. It enables me to access a small amount of money almost instantly, with no red tape. That means I can do what I said I would do straight away to manage what is usually a crisis point. That leads to clients trusting me, they share more information about how bad their situation is and how ashamed they feel. After that I can really get to work on providing some long-term solutions. It is an amazing resource to have.” - Kamaldeep Deo. Dementia Worker, Engage Leeds
