Pivoting in Life
In 2023, the United States witnessed a tragic milestone as more than 50,000 Americans took their own lives, marking the highest yearly rate of suicide on record. Among the most affected are farmers, who face unique challenges that often go unnoticed. In fact, farmers are 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population.
Pivoting in Life is an ongoing campaign of Agrellus to support initiatives that save lives. Agrellus has selected AgriSafe Network as its trusted partner to use proceeds of the campaign to reduce health disparities in agricultural communities. AgriSafe understands the pressures of farming and ranching and works to protect the people who feed the world by providing trainings and resources on the full spectrum of occupational risks experienced by producers. Among many other programs, AgriSafe operates the AgriStress Helpline in 11 states, the only 24/7 crisis line for farmers.
Pivoting in Life is a concept that Carey Portell knows well. She is a cattle farmer with disabilities after becoming a survivor of a drunk driver. She speaks publicly about her four-year recovery and her choice to overcome her circumstance. Now, maintaining mental health is non-negotiable for Carey.
