Story
The Rotary Club of Teddington and the Hamptons are fund raising to support disaster relief for Beirut. Funds raised here will be forwarded directly to the Rotary Club of Beirut Cosmopolitan who can make sure it is used most effectively. Here is what hey had to say when we made contact...
"The explosion at the port of Beirut on 4 August 2020 as you have come to understand impacted the entire city resulting in widespread destruction, leading to the loss of lives in the hundreds, injuries in the thousands and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of citizens overwhelming the hospitals and emergency services.
This tragedy came on top of a political, economic and financial meltdown that had already paralyzed the country, significantly devalued the Lebanese currency and driven more than 50% of the population below the poverty line (an issue RC Beirut Cosmopolitan is addressing through sustainable economic development solutions). To add insult to injury the whole deterioration in the country was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 virus.
In tackling the Beirut crisis in the aftermath of the explosion, the following areas were identified as needing urgent attention:
1. Medical Supplies, PPE Equipment
2. Food
3. Shelter, blankets and house items
4. Cleaning up damage and debris
5. Repairs and renovations
6. Psychological trauma support
7. Collecting recyclable material such as glass, aluminium, metal and wood, etc
Our club's priority will be to focus on the last three items (Repairs and renovations, Psychological trauma support, Collecting recyclable material). To accomplish this we have set up an emergency fund to support the Beirut recovery operation. "
Any money donated here will go directly to this recovery fund, so there are no "agency fees" and the money gets directly to the front line.
