Story

Two million children have fled Ukraine already.

Thousands of children are arriving in the UK having left their loved ones, education, and home behind. These children now need to start a new life whilst healing from trauma.

With the help of literacy experts, we've designed the Bookmark Box for Ukrainian children aged 5-9 to make them feel welcomed, comfortable in their new surroundings and to build their familiarity with the English language.

You can help Ukrainian child refugees turn the first page of their new chapter by supporting our Bookmark Box for Ukraine.

Why is the box so important?

Research shows that children who read and write in their spare time have better mental health than their peers (NLT). The Bookmark Box for Ukraine will encourage a shared family reading experience and is filled with the resources to support the children's wellbeing through storytelling and play.

The box itself will be illustrated with a personalised Squibbles colouring sheet so that the children can make it their own. At a time when these children have left so much behind, this box will be their very own to keep forever.

What's in the box?*

Each box will contain a tablet loaded with Ukrainian and English storybooks to represent the children's own culture whilst exploring a new one, language and literacy apps, such as ChatterStars and Twinkl with Rhino Readers, and a SIM card with mobile data allowance to stay in touch with displaced loved ones around the world.

The box will also include physical books, starting-school stationary sets, sensory games and storytelling aides such as playdough and finger puppets for therapeutic play, as well as activity booklets with colouring in sheets, literacy and journaling worksheets.

How can you gift a box to a child?

Make a donation or fundraise for our campaign by creating your own page to help support as many Ukrainian children start their next chapter. Here's what your fundraising could do:

£5 - Gift a school stationery set to be included in a child's Bookmark Box, so they feel more prepared to start school in the UK

£15 - Gift sensory games and storytelling aids to a child, encouraging therapeutic play to support their wellbeing

£50 - Gift a selection of books in both Ukrainian and English to a child arriving in the UK so they can feel connected to their homes and start to build their familiarity with the English language

£60 - Gift a child a tablet loaded with e-books, language and literacy apps, and a SIM card with mobile data allowance so they can stay in touch with friends and family displaced around the world

£150 - Gift a child their very own Bookmark Box. It will be their own precious treasure chest filled with literacy resources and tools to help their wellbeing, personal and social development

£1,050 - Gift seven children their own Bookmark Box and help them start their new chapter

£10,000 - Gift 66 children their very own Bookmark Box. This is the equivalent of six football teams

**PLEASE NOTE: Actual box contents may vary. Box and contents are not suitable for children under 3 years old due to small parts.

Prior to lockdown, eight children in an average class in England would leave primary school unable to read well. Bookmark has an incredibly simple vision: we want every child to read. We give children the reading skills and confidence they need for a fair chance in life.
