Anyone who knows an asylum seeker will be aware that they don't always have the easiest time of it when they get to the UK. They have very little in terms of resources and it can take a long time before they're awarded refugee status and become allowed to work. While waiting for their asylum hearing they are not allowed to take paid employment or recieve benefits except for £40 per week.
Despite the limited income, they still need to get to appointments regarding their asylum claim, get children to school, access healthcare and get out and meet people. This can create real difficulties.
This is where we come in. We give bikes, helmets and locks to those in need, helping them get where they need to go at no cost.
People from Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Sudan and now Ukraine have all benefited. Young and old - it's a green gift that allows needs to be met (shopping, appointments, school run) and gives the option for fun and health-giving activity. It's free and is very low impact environmentally.
A bike can make the difference between isolation and hope during this period.
We provide approximately 10 bikes a month to refugees and asylum seekers who have arrived in Bradford.
Many of the refugees and asylum seekers we support end up volunteering with us - helping fix bikes to pass to other refugees and asylum seekers. This volunteering helps them develop their skills, improve their English, make friends and feel like they are giving back to the community that supported them.
