Story
Replacing Animal Research (formerly FRAME) was founded in 1969 by animal advocate Dorothy Hegarty, who believed in a smarter, science-led path to ending animal testing. Dorothy worked with researchers and the public to develop and support humane, effective alternatives to animal experiments.
From developing one of the first non-animal cosmetic tests at our FRAME Lab in Nottingham, to influencing UK legislation and helping bring about the EU ban on animal testing for cosmetics, we’ve led the way in non-animal research.
Today, with over 77% of animal experiments in the UK used in basic and applied research where no legal requirement exists our focus is clear: fund innovative science, promote human-relevant methods, and drive real change in how research is done.
We're a small, agile team with a big vision: a world where no animal suffers for science. Brave, collaborative, science-led and always respectful, we honour Dorothy’s legacy every day, for animals, for humans, for the future.
