Olivia Watts is raising money for Replacing Animal Research

London Marathon 2026 · 26 April 2026 ·

By supporting us, you're helping to create a future where no animal suffers for science.

Story

The hopelessness of the animals imprisoned in UK labs and universities can only be matched by the hopelessness of humans waiting for cures for diseases that will not come until we use human relevant science. We all know someone who has died of a disease that should be curable after all the decades of research.

Animals bred to be tested on know only terror and pain. They receive no compassion, no affection and no comfort after painful, distressing procedures often carried out without pain relief and they are left to suffer afterwards. Their torture continues until their bodies can’t take any more or they are put out of their misery.

The life sciences sector is massive and very lucrative for everyone involved in it, at the expense of both animals and humans. Potential cures and effective treatments are missed due to the misleading results of experiments on animals. Over 92% of drugs that pass animal experiments go on to fail in human trials, often causing humans harm. It is important to note here that it is not only drugs and medical procedures that are tested on animals but household products and weapons too.

The New Approach Methods (NAMs) are available; organ on a chip, in vitro and in silico use human biology based technology instead of animals. The results are reliable, unlike animal experiments. Despite the alternatives having a higher success rate, being available and ethical, vivisection is a profitable industry that those who have built their livelihoods and reputations on do not want to come to an end. Dr Pandora Pound explains this in more depth in her book, Rat Trap: The Capture of Medicine by Animal Research – and how to Break Free. We must dismantle the life sciences sector from within to end it once and for all and that means supporting the 3Rs.

A bit About Me

I’ve felt compelled to advocate for animals from the age of about six, accompanying my mum and her friend on educational/outreach stalls that they organised in Luton town centre. I helped hand out leaflets about the failings of animal experiments and listened to their conversations with the many people who stopped to engage. My mum worked for The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research (Animal Free Research UK) for seven years and I was privileged to spend time with Dr Gill Langley and other respected animal advocates throughout my childhood.

I joined the World Day for Animals in Laboratories marches and took every opportunity to speak about animal experiments, submitting my GCSE Art project expressing the hopelessness and despair of animals suffering in labs.

Thank you for reading and all donations and shares are massively appreciated! I’ve lost count of the amount of times I've said that whatever I’m going through is nothing compared to what the animals imprisoned and tortured in UK labs and breeding facilities such as MBR go through 24/7.
