The Prison Reform Trust aims to create a just, humane and effective penal system. We do this by conducting research into the prison system and conditions, informing prisoners, staff, the media and the wider public of our findings and campaigning for reform among MPs, peers and government officials.

Story

On Friday 25 April, the Prison Reform Trust, in partnership with HMP Brixton’s Physical Education Instructors, brought Run for Reform to life. This initiative delivered a 16-week training programme for ten residents, culminating in a half marathon held on prison grounds (run as a 600m loop). The event included participants from across the prison service, charitable organisations, and the UK’s wider running community—including staff members, the No.1 Governor, and external volunteers.

The event raised nearly £8,000 for the Prison Reform Trust.

The initiative aligned strongly with the recommendations of the 2018 A Sporting Chance review, which called for greater collaboration between prisons, local communities, and sporting organisations. The success at Brixton has shown just how powerful those partnerships can be. The half marathon was not only a milestone achievement for the residents but also a moment of collective pride for staff, volunteers, and all involved.

The Prison Radio Association came down to the event and beautifully captured the spirit and impact of the day. To listen to The Secret Life of Prisons podcast episode please use the link -

One resident who took part in the programme said

“Last Friday I felt treated like a human being. Like a member of society. It is my first ever achievement. I have never really achieved anything that was positive before, that was the first I could take to my family so thank you for the opportunity.”

Another said

“There was a unity and togetherness that came out of this from the training right up to event day. In those two hours I felt free, I felt connected to everyone beside me. I am proud of myself. My family are proud of me.”

The Prison Reform Trust are pleased to announce that they have now partnered with HMP New Hall and plan to bring Run for Reform to the female estate this summer. The project will offer the women:

A structured training programme designed to support both physical and mental health.

Weekly sessions with local running experts providing motivation and practical coaching.

A buddy scheme linking each participant with a member of the UK’s running community—offering mentorship, encouragement, and fundraising advice.

Participating in an event day and medal ceremony.
