We're Here, We're Queer; Refugees are Welcome Here!
That was the chant from over 30 LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers who have finally found pride in their identity as we joined Glasgow's Pride march through a busy city centre.
For many of the people that we have the pleasure of working with, this moment was previously unimaginable.
LGBT Health and Wellbeing have been supporting LGBT+ refugees & asylum seekers in Glasgow since March 2020. This community faces multiple issues compounded by additional prejudice, stigma and homophobia. Many have to get by on just £8 per week practically prohibiting them from doing anything, including attending appointments with support services or accessing places where they feel safe to be themselves.
Sadly, some of our community have experienced extremely violent attacks even when they have reached the UK, including in the accommodation that is supposed to keep them safe. Some have attempted suicide and/or turned to substance abuse or self harm to escape or cope with their circumstance.
Our service evaluation shows that:
- 93% report thought of suicide
- 95% report thoughts of self-harm
Our project has been a vital lifeline for around 350 people since its inception by:
- offering one-to-one practical and emotional support throughout the refugee/asylum-seeking process;
- reducing social isolation by creating a place of safety, a sense of community & providing a programme of social events and;
- educating people to live well and integrate into the local community.
Despite everything that many LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers experience - before seeking safety, during, and after - they continue to show an incredible level of resilience and determination to becoming a safe, settled, and smiling contributor to Scotland's vibrant community.
