We're Here, We're Queer; Refugees are Welcome Here!
That was the chant from over 30 LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers who have finally found pride in their identity as we joined Glasgow's Pride march through a busy city centre.
For many of the people that we have the pleasure of working with, this moment was previously unimaginable.
LGBT Health and Wellbeing have been supporting LGBT+ refugees & asylum seekers in Glasgow since March 2020. This community faces multiple issues compounded by additional prejudice, stigma and homophobia. Many have to get by on just £8 per week practically prohibiting them from doing anything, including attending appointments with support services or accessing places where they feel safe to be themselves.
