Story
Safe Anchor Trust has been providing enjoyable & therapeutic boat trips for the disadvantaged since 1995, to meet a need that existed then &, increasingly, still exists today. We pride ourselves on offering fantastic experiences, regardless of creed or ethnicity, to those in the community who live with physical or mental disabilities, poor health, social isolation, age or deprivation.
We normally operate from 1st March to 31st October, 7 days a week & typically carry over 10,000 passengers each year, on over 1,000 trips, provided by more than 4,500 volunteer days. The number of individuals suffering mental illness or social isolation as a result of COVID 19 restrictions will undoubtedly increase the demand for our service
There are 5 boats in our fleet including 2 broad beam boats specially designed for wheelchair users or passengers with mobility difficulties. Each boat, by law, can carry a maximum of 12 passengers with larger groups being accommodated on additional boats. All boats have toilets, 2 have disabled, and cooking facilities
We have around 140 volunteers in the Safe Anchor Family who all give their time & skills for free & without expenses. The vast majority of these live, many have grown up, in the local area & there is a strong duty of care & support for each other amongst them. All Helmsmen & crew are cleared by the UK Disclosure & Barring Service & undergo training to national standards. Safe Anchor Trust is an accredited Royal Yachting Association Inland Waterways Training Centre & so we are able to train our volunteers to the highest standard.
There is a huge & increasing number of people & organisations waiting for the day when it is safe to venture out & come boating with us. We want to return to putting a smile on thousands of faces each year.
