Story
There has been a great deal of development in Phnom Penh and the surrounding area, which has had a negative affect on the water table and the ability of the ground to absorb rainwater, which in turn has caused increased flooding.
The Harvest of Hope school serves a poor community in the city. The education that it delivers provides a route out of poverty for the children who are born there. Unfortunately, the construction of a ring road nearby has adversely affected water drainage and the school now experiences regular flooding. This makes the school a health hazard when it is flooded, so the childrens' education get regularly disrupted.
Together with Serve Cambodia, our partner in the country, we want to safeguard the educational opportunities for this community. Various options have been considered, including relocating the school, but this would be too costly and would mean moving the school too far from the community that it serves. We have therefore decided that we must raise the school up by rebuilding it above the flood water level.
Please help us rescue this school so that these children can continue to receive an education that gives them a chance to get out of poverty.
The fundraising target represents the cost of raising up and rebuilding the school. It has included a small contingency allowing for price rises for materials and changes to exchange rates. If at the end of the project there is any surplus it will be allocated to our general project development fund. Gift Aid payments will be used to fund Mission Direct's general operational and administrative costs.
