Story

*JULY 2025 UPDATE*

In February 2025, we broke the news to you all about how we were at imminent risk of animal centre closure, as a result of the extremely difficult financial situation we found ourselves in due to rising costs and money we were waiting on. After we told everyone the news, we were absolutely overwhelmed with the support and generosity we received from people and you have so far helped us raise an incredible £83,000!

Although we have had to put a temporary stop on dog rehoming, we are still continuing to rehome cats. New opportunities on the back of this have also opened up to allow us to still look after dogs, but on a welfare basis only, until they are ready to be transferred to another centre to be rehomed. This has meant that with your help, we have been able to keep our centre doors open, and keep staff in jobs and we honestly can’t thank you enough for helping to make this happen. Whether you have made a donation, shared our appeal on social media, fundraised for us, volunteered for us, spread the word about our appeal – you have been a big part of making all of this happen!

However, we are not over this yet and we still need your help to support us in any way you can. The next year or two is going to be tricky and we will need you with us every step of the way, so we can try and get back to our original operations – rehoming both cats and dogs! If you would like to find out about ways in which you can support us, please see below:

URGENT APPEAL: SAVE OUR ANIMAL CENTRE

We are heartbroken to announce that our branch is in a severe financial crisis, and we need your help now more than ever. We are a completely self-funded charity, registered with the Charity Commission, separate from the National RSPCA, and we rely heavily on the support of our local community to continue our vital work. However, with rising costs of utilities, vet bills, food, and overheads, along with reduced income, we have had to take drastic action. Without immediate support, we could be forced to close our doors, leaving countless abused and neglected animals without the care they desperately need.

For many years, we’ve been a lifeline for dogs and cats who have suffered unimaginable abuse and neglect, providing them with veterinary treatment, dedicated care, rehabilitation, and loving new homes. But now, we are the ones who are also in need of rescue.

The situation is critical. We are currently waiting on £97,000 of promised funds that have yet to arrive, but in the meantime, things have become extremely difficult for us. Every day that passes without these funds, brings us closer to the unthinkable, of having to close our centre which so many animals rely on. The promised funds would keep us going and give us more time to recover and stabilise our financial position. To address this extreme need we are reluctantly having to temporarily stop the intake and rehoming of dogs, and go through an Animal Centre staff restructure.

This is our biggest appeal yet, and we can’t do this alone.

We are asking everyone, our loyal supporters, animal lovers, and the wider community, to come together and help us through this financial crisis. Every pound raised will go directly towards keeping our doors open and ensuring that abused and neglected animals in the Leeds and Wakefield area continue to get the second chance they deserve.
