Story
Our amazing volunteer Scarlett is running the Manchester Marathon to raise money for Newton Community Centre — a place that has played a vital role in the local community for over 30 years and that means a great deal to people personally.
Scarlett is one of our volunteers and her mum Nicola works at the centre, Scarlett sees what happens here at the Centre from many different angles, both as a visitor and behind the scenes. What people might not always realise is just how much the centre does. It supports a food bank, runs free children’s playschemes during the summer, offers befriending projects for people feeling lonely, and provides friendship calls for those who are isolated at home. Alongside this, there are men’s and women’s groups, affordable training courses such as BSL and first aid, a community café, a pay‑it‑forward board, a beautiful community garden, and more than 30 other classes, groups and activities.
What really stands out is the level of care that goes into everything. Newton Community Centre is a place where people are known by name, where a cup of tea and a chat can genuinely change someone’s day, and where no one is made to feel like a problem for needing support. I’ve also seen how much hard work and dedication it takes to keep it all running, much of it made possible by volunteers who give their time simply because they care.
The centre is self‑funded and relies heavily on fundraising to keep its doors open. It’s easy to overlook places like this, but they make a huge difference — especially for people who might otherwise feel isolated, overwhelmed, or forgotten. If we can help support this special place in any way, it feels worth every mile. Thank you so much for your support — it truly makes a difference.
