Situated three miles south of the town of Nantwich, in a pleasant rural locality, catering for children aged from 4-11 years. Known originally as Broomhall Board school, and later as Sound Council school, the school first opened its doors on 25th July 1876. The original Grade II listed building still forms part of the school, and has been added to and extended over the years, marrying the old Victorian origins of the school to the new.
The building consists of five classrooms, an art area, two smaller rooms for group teaching, a hall and the usual office accommodation and staff room. The kitchen abuts the hall which provides the dining area at lunchtimes.
The school and grounds occupy approximately 4.5 acres of land used for various activities to support the curriculum, and for extracurricular activities too. Part of this land includes a mature orchard of apple trees and a mature wooded area. The orchard and wooded area provide opportunities to develop health and well being and provide a focus for outdoor interdisciplinary learning across science, sustainable development, heritage and local history.
It was a fantastic achievement when we secured the capital funding for a new classroom, this will allow the school to better utilise the teaching staff to provide the best education environment we can for our children.
What you may not be aware of is that with the celebration came a direct financial cost to the already stretched school budget. With capital funding provided by the local authority the school has to find 10% from its own budget. That is money we were already planning to spend on our childrens education, be it on resources, the upkeep of the building or on staff.
The 90% funding we did secure was to cover the build costs alone. This will leave us with a room with a carpet, nowhere for a teacher to sit or store their work or books. It will be devoid of desks and chairs for the children, nowhere for the children to store their PE equipment and no IT equipment such as a projector.
