Story
Southampton Buddhist Centre is a place of inspiration, friendship and transformation. Every week, more people walk through our door seeking stillness, community and meaning. Many stay and benefit greatly from what the centre and sangha have to offer.
At present, however, our centre carries a loan of over £50,000. This debt is manageable, just, but it is limiting what we can achieve.
Our goal is to raise £25,000 to halve our debt by Sangha Day on 21 November 2026.
At present a large proportion of our income goes towards repayments rather than:
- Expanding classes and courses
- Growing young people’s activities
- Supporting outreach into colleges and universities
- Improving and maintaining our building
Imagine what could be possible if our centre were debt-free. We could:
- Make Buddhism and meditation more accessible for the local area
- Create a beautiful and well-maintained spiritual home for our sangha
- Focus energy and resources on sharing the Dharma rather than on repayments
Freeing our centre from debt is not just a financial goal. It is a collective act of generosity and faith in the future of Buddhism in Southampton.
You can help achieve this through generosity and practical help:
Generosity
Every contribution matters — whether £10 or £1,000.
- One-off donations
- Regular monthly giving through standing orders
- Registering for Gift Aid
- Matching gifts from employers
If 100 people gave £250, we would achieve our goal. If 100 people gave £20 a month, the burden would steadily lift.
Practical Help
Could you create and run a fundraising initiative with fellow sangha members? For example:
- A sponsored meditation sit or 24-hour practice
- An arts event at the centre
- A bake sale or community meal
- A sponsored walk or other active event
- An offer of your skills to others in return for donations to the centre
- Help identifying and securing grants from local businesses
A Shared Endeavour
The Buddha taught generosity (dāna) as a foundation of spiritual life. This campaign is an opportunity to practise generosity together out of care and love for something precious which we are fortunate enough to share.
If our centre has supported you in times of difficulty or joy, through learning or friendship, this is a moment to help secure its future for others.
With gratitude and confidence in our shared community.
