Story

Thank you for supporting the South Downs Walking Challenge in aid of the McCarthy Stone Foundation.

On Thursday 18 June 2026, 200 walkers will take on the South Downs Challenge, starting and finishing in Eastbourne, East Sussex, to raise vital funds to help reduce loneliness and isolation among people in later life.

Walkers can choose from distances of 12km, 30km or 47km, making this challenge suitable for a wide range of abilities. Colleagues, friends, family members, supply partners and supporters of the Foundation will come together to enjoy the stunning South Downs countryside while raising money for an important cause.

Why we’re walking

Loneliness is one of the biggest challenges facing older people today, particularly those living in the most deprived areas of the UK. The McCarthy Stone Foundation supports charities and community initiatives that help people aged 65+ stay connected, supported and engaged.

Funds raised through this challenge help support:

- Dementia charities

- Befriending services

- Social and community groups

- Community Transport Charities

These services make a meaningful and lasting difference to the lives of older people.

Double your impact

Every donation made to this campaign is match funded, meaning every pound donated is doubled, significantly increasing the impact of your support.

Participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £100, which helps cover essential event costs such as safety support, event T-shirts and finish-line refreshments. Any funds raised above this go directly towards the Foundation’s charitable work.

Thank you

Thank you for supporting everyone taking part in the South Downs Walking Challenge. Whether you donate, share this page or cheer on our walkers, your support will help reduce loneliness and improve quality of life for older people across the UK.

💙 Together, we can make a real difference.
