Story
About Square Food Foundation
We are an award-winning food education charity based in Knowle West, Bristol.
For over 25 years, our mission has been to make cooking accessible for people of all ages and abilities. We run free and subsidised classes, a recipe kit delivery service and food education programmes across Bristol, bringing people together to learn to cook nutritious meals from scratch.
We believe cooking is a vehicle for positive change, supporting people to develop good health, mental wellbeing, improved self-confidence and social connectivity.
Our vision is a community where everyone has access to nutritious food and the skills to prepare it.
I took more than cooking skills home. I’ve learned to socialise with all different types of people as well as finding out about different opinions and aspects of life
Why does it matter?
Last year, Bristol saw the highest recorded number of families accessing food banks, with 1 in 12 households suffering from food insecurity.
Beyond simply providing free food to those who need it most, Square Food Foundation empowers people with the skills and resources to cook affordable and nutritious meals from scratch.
We believe discovering a love for food and cooking can help people to make social connections, build self-confidence, develop independence and feel part of a community.
It has really helped me to try new things that I felt nervous about trying before and it has helped me gain confidence with how to cook with unfamiliar ingredients
In 2025 we:
- Taught 370 classes, creating nutritious meals from scratch
- Engaged 475 new learners
- Distributed 6,410 recipe kits, generating over 25,000 meals
- Generated 2,900 volunteering hours
From tackling diet-related health inequalities, to empowering the next generation of aspiring chefs, support our mission to transform cooking, healthy eating and food education in Bristol.
