Story

Coming together to save lives

For the first time this year, you can be part of this very special occasion from where you are by creating your own walk between Friday 30th July and Sunday 1st August, which is World Lung Cancer Day. Maybe there is a route that is special to you and your family. Or perhaps, youd like to visit somewhere scenic or significant whilst out on your walk. Its completely up to you.

You can also join us on Friday 30th July, where we will also be hosting our Step in Summer fundraising event in Liverpool, a six-mile walk along the citys iconic waterfront. With music, entertainment and goodies along the way, the evening will be filled with fun, hopefully sun and long overdue chat ups.

Everyone who takes part, virtually or at the physical event will receive a Roy Castle t-shirt and well-deserved medal.

Walk for people like Pat

However you join our Step into Summer event, youll be helping people like Pat.

Pat was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015. Fortunately, it was caught early, and she was able to have surgery. Six years on and she remains cancer free.

Pat is now part of our latest awareness campaign Spot the Difference to help others recognise the early subtle symptoms of the disease and take action so they too can be diagnosed earlier.

Prior to the pandemic, there was a real momentum behind lung cancer. More people were being diagnosed earlier. There were more life-lengthening treatments were available and we were on the cusp of national lung cancer screening programme.

Then Covid hit. Lung cancer referral rate fell by a staggering 75% and remain significantly below expected levels, resulting in thousands of people missing out on an earlier and potential life-saving diagnosis.

But now, with restrictions lifting it is time to pull together to restore the momentum and save lives.

In 2019, our amazing walkers raised on average £150 per person. After the year we have had, we want - and need - to exceed this so we can help more people get diagnosed early like Pat.

So, lets all come together and step towards a brighter future for lung cancer.
