Story
On the weekend of the 6th September 2025 Step Out Mentoring will be embarking on its biggest challenge yet. Hiking 1085 meters up Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon) in Wales.
As a community of young people, mentors and supporters we will be supporting each other to submit over that weekend. For many of us it will be the first time hiking up a mountain.
Why are we doing this?
Each year Step Out Mentoring takes on a different outdoor challenge to raise awareness and vital funds for the work we do supporting young people. In 2024 we walked from London to Brighton. In 2023 we ran, cycled and walked through all the green spaces in the London borough of Southwark.
Step-Out Mentoring is an early intervention mentoring organisation that provides support for children and young people in the heart of Southwark through outdoor based 1:1 mentoring and group workshops. We work with children and young people aged 8-18 who are disengaged with education and/or life.
Our vision is to see children and young people supported through tough times and empowered with the skills and emotional resilience to thrive in life and play positive roles in their communities. The programme was designed to support children aged 8-18 who are experiencing serious emotional and behavioural difficulties, arising from trauma, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect or domestic violence. These young people will have been struggling with complex issues and so a safe outdoor based program opens up opportunity to re-build resilience and confidence, as well as helping them to re-engage with their families, schools and wider communities. We work to support them in forging a way through life, encouraging them to thrive and become positive change makers in their communities.
Step Out Mentoring provides mentors from within the local community to young people aged 8-18. Step Out trains and recruits local volunteers and then matches them to young people who are referred to our service through GP's, Social services, Schools and health centres. The volunteer mentors meet the young people once a week for outdoor based sessions. The sessions last for 12 months and provide an opportunity to walk alongside young people and create spaces where they can talk about their challenges and process what they are going through. Whilst enjoying fun engaging sessions such as cycling, boxing, swimming, art or just going for a walk.
Thank you so much for supporting these young people. If you would like to find out more please visit our website at:
