Story

14-15 May at Windmill Farm Business Hub, Chalfont St Giles, Bucks

What is the event?

This is an event for everyone! Clients, supporters, friends, families and the local community coming together in support of Dreamland Mission Hospital (DMH).

Whether you’d like to walk, jog, run, cheer others on or simply come along for a cup of tea and a slice of cake, you are very much part of it. Our shared goal is to complete 1,000 laps across the two-day event, but how you take part is entirely up to you.

You might choose to:

- Enjoy a gentle walk around the shorter lap of Windmill Farm

- Challenge yourself to the longer 6.7km route

- Drop in for tea, cake and conversation

There will be a tea and cake station - a place to gather, chat and soak up the atmosphere (whether you’ve done a lap or not!). We’ll also have a MedAid tent where you can learn more about the specialist equipment used for limb-saving surgeries at Dreamland Mission Hospital.

Alongside the community event, a small group of experienced runners, including Andy Hounsell of Beyond Finance, will be taking on an endurance challenge inspired by the “Backyard Ultra”: running a 6.7km lap every hour, on the hour, aiming to continue for 24 hours as part of our collective push towards 1,000 laps. They will need all the support they can get!

Timings: The challenge begins at 12 noon on Thursday 14th May and continues until 9pm. We start again at 6am on Friday 15th May, with the event officially finishing at 12 noon.

Double the impact

What’s exciting is that, thanks to a generous partner, this is a match-funding opportunity - meaning that every £1 given will be doubled! Whatever you give will go twice as far!

Why is this project important?

DMH is based in a rural part of western Kenya where access to healthcare is limited and often unaffordable for the poorest people. In the UK, we’re blessed to have the NHS where fixing a broken limb is usually routine and free. But for people in and around Kimilili, it can become a life-altering crisis. If metalwork, costing between £600-£900, is needed, it is simply unaffordable. The options are to live with a limb that no longer functions, or face amputation. The choices are stark and devastating.

We’re determined to change that. The community is asking for help, and the hospital already has the theatre facilities in place. What’s missing are the funds to purchase the metalwork and cover the cost of surgery.

Examples of surgery costs (including hospital stay, food and medicines):

~ 1 internal wire for orthopaedics - £10

~ A pair of crutches - £30

~ Suturing under general anaesthetic - £50

~ Simple fracture realignment - £75

~ Basic burns surgery - £120

~ Simple club foot surgery - £300

~ Child orthopaedics surgery - £350

~ Child orthopaedics surgery with metalwork - £650

~ Adult orthopaedics surgery - £450

~ Adult orthopaedics surgery with metalwork - £870

Who will benefit?

The funds raised from the challenge will have a far-reaching impact on individuals, families and communities. Here’s the story of a child who has already benefited from our surgical services.

Newton was born with bilateral clubfoot - instead of celebrating his arrival, his mother was overwhelmed with heartbreak, worried about the rejection and ridicule her family would face because of his disability. For years, Newton’s parents didn’t seek treatment simply because they didn’t know clubfoot could be corrected. As he grew older, walking became difficult and school life was challenging. He lacked confidence and was often mocked by classmates. Everything changed when his school informed the family about free clubfoot surgery at Dreamland Mission Hospital. A short time later, Newton underwent corrective surgery — and it was a success. Today, Newton walks without pain or limping. He is confident, happy, and no longer afraid to go to school. His father shares with gratitude, “My son can now live the life other children are living.”

And a young motorbike taxi driver:

Abraham was involved in a serious head-on collision while out earning a living. He lost consciousness and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he received first aid and was discharged. However, once home, his pain worsened. A neighbour recommended Dreamland Mission Hospital, but Abraham’s mother hesitated, fearing the costs of a private facility. Reassured that Dreamland is a mission hospital focused on serving the community, they decided to seek help. An X-ray revealed a serious injury — a mid-shaft fracture of his right clavicle — requiring urgent surgery. Abraham underwent a successful clavicle plating procedure and is now completely recovered. His family is deeply grateful for the swift, professional care he received. “We are so fortunate to have such top-notch medical care right here in our community,” his mother shared.

Your support helps ensure patients like Abraham and Newton receive life-changing treatment when they need it most.

Small print

Even if we don’t hit our target in this challenge, all the funds raised will be directed towards funding orthopaedic surgeries. If we raise more than our goal, we may direct any donations that exceed our goal towards other areas of the hospital’s work as needed.
