Help Us Protect One of Bridgend’s Oldest Treasures

Recently, stone tiles have begun falling from the roof. Because the building sits directly beside a public footpath, this poses a serious risk to pedestrians. A report has confirmed that the roof is in poor condition and requires urgent attention.

St John’s House is a Grade II* listed building and the oldest habitable secular structure in Bridgend. This remarkable Tudor hearth‑passage house — dated by dendrochronology to around 1511 — is an irreplaceable part of the town’s story and a rare survivor of its era owned by a local charity.

Story

Help Us Protect One of Bridgend’s Oldest Treasures

St John’s House is a Grade II* listed building and the oldest habitable secular structure in Bridgend. This remarkable Tudor hearth‑passage house — dated by dendrochronology to around 1511 — is an irreplaceable part of the town’s story and a rare survivor of its era.

The building is owned and cared for by St John’s House Trust (Bridgend), a registered charity (1147340) run entirely by volunteers. We open the house regularly to the public and rely solely on donations, a small shop, and community events to keep this historic landmark alive.

Recently, stone tiles have begun falling from the roof. Because the building sits directly beside a public footpath, this poses a serious risk to pedestrians. Emergency scaffolding has now been erected to prevent injury, and a professional report has confirmed that the roof is in poor condition and requires urgent repair to make the building safe.

The essential work is estimated at £5,000.

We are asking the community — and anyone who values Bridgend’s heritage — to help us safeguard this unique building. Any donation, large or small, will directly support the repair project and ensure St John’s House remains standing for future generations.

Thank you for helping protect a piece of Bridgend’s history.
