Sokkorn’s Story: Volunteering with SWIM Cambodia Since 2018
Why am I volunteering at SWIM Cambodia / Hile Teuk Kampuchea? I originally volunteered for SWIM Cambodia in 2018 and later joined Hile Teuk
Kampuchea when it began in Siem Reap. Working and sharing good knowledge and skills with the community is my passion.
The experience of losing someone to drowning, due to a lack of awareness and education, is painful. I lost my niece, who had just graduated from High School. During a small party, her friend fell into a pond. She jumped in to save her and succeeded—but lost her own life. Years later, I almost lost another niece. She slipped while playing near the water. The current pulled her away. Thankfully, her cousin cried for help, and she was rescued in time. That cousin carried the trauma for a long time, having watched but been unable to help. I know I can’t stop every drowning, but I can be part of spreading knowledge and skills in the hope of building awareness and reducing these tragedies.
