The situation in Sudan is currently volatile and the city of Khartoum is in lockdown. Islamic Relief is extremely concerned at the new escalation of violence in Sudan, which risks exacerbating the country's humanitarian crisis. More than 15 million people across Sudan are already suffering from food shortages and rampant inflation.
Over 800 civilians have been killed and thousands injured from the fighting. Islamic Relief staff in Sudan are monitoring the situation and are on standby to provide vital aid if the crisis escalates further. More than 1 million people have been displaced. If the violence continues and spreads there is a high risk of large numbers of women, men and children being displaced from their homes.
Hospitals need urgent support. Most hospitals in Khartoum are no longer functioning and several hospitals have been bombed and shot at. Others have run out of fuel and cannot function. Those still open are crowded with injured people and running out of medicine and supplies. They don't even have enough bandages. Lots of injured people can't even reach hospitals as the streets are too dangerous as the fighting spreads into more residential areas. We urgently need the parties to the conflict tp agree safe routes to evacuate people and enable aid agencies to support people."- Elsadig Elnour, Country Director, Islamic Relief Sudan
