MUSIC CHANGES LIVES!
Children from low income families are half as likely to learn an instrument, according to recent research. Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT) believes ALL children should have access to music lessons in schools, regardless of their background or affordability. BYMT's Young Musicians' Bursary (YMB), helps young people who need financial support to access music lessons, instrument hire and membership of bands, orchestras and choirs.
Alex, who joined The Royal Marines in 2022, started learning Saxophone at secondary school and was soon a member of BYMT's Training Band, rehearsing on Saturday mornings.
From then I progressed through to Senior Band and Symphonic Winds where I also had the opportunity to play both Tenor and Baritone Saxophone. I was delighted to receive an invitation to join BYMT’s prestigious Concert Band and join them on their Summer Tour to The Loire. I am now 1st Sax at BYCB and am looking forward to our Wells Tour next month. I passed Grade 8 with distinction on both Piano and Saxophone in Year 11. The encouragement that I have received from the teachers and Band Leaders at BYMT has been phenomenal. I am very grateful to all at BYMT for providing the opportunities, experience and financial support putting me on the right path for a career in music. Thank you so much, Bromley Youth Music TrustI joined BYMT after taking part in ‘Band OnThe Run’ (an introduction to school children to playing musical instruments) at my primary school. I could not contain my excitement at the prospect of learning a Brass Instrument. I used to get home and immediately run to play the pieces we had learned to play along to the backing tracks. Today as I start university, I have been overwhelmed by this environment which is unfamiliar to me. However, my time at BYMT has led me to feel like I am at home wherever I can make music with others. I joined the orchestra when I got to college. It then felt as though I belonged there which helped me to settle into it.
Here at BYMT we know that taking part in music making helps our students gain a multitude of life skills, including building self-confidence. Will told us:

BYMT's music service has been around in one form or another for almost half a century and is dedicated to providing music services to the local community. Thank you for helping BYMT to make a difference - let's continue to give the joy of music for another 50 years.
