At just 2 days old, Oakley was diagnosed with Microlissencephaly, a rare brain condition, and his prognosis was bleak. We were told he might be fully dependent for life, potentially blind, deaf, unable to move or speak. Despite the devastating news, we made a pact to do whatever it took to give Oakley the best chance.
Oakley’s first year was filled with hospital stays, seizures, and uncertainty. Each day brought new challenges. We followed the medical model to address his needs but soon realized a more tailored approach was necessary for his growth. We began exploring therapies and treatments that aligned with Oakley’s unique needs, focusing on giving him the best chance at a bright future.
Through research and seeking the right therapies, Oakley has made incredible progress. His seizures have lessened, he has regained the ability to swallow, his vision is improving, and he is gaining more control over his hands. But it is not just his physical progress – Oakley’s cheeky personality shines through. His smiles and laughter are a constant reminder of his determination.
Though we’ve come so far, there is still much to be done. We have big dreams for Oakley, and his heart and spirit show us that anything is possible.
