Every pound raised will transform the lives of people in need. People just like Alaya.
In Malawi this year, the number of people facing hunger rose to 2.6 million, with the coronavirus worsening an already alarming situation.*Changing weather patterns, worsened by deforestation, has caused droughts followed by floods, destroying any hope of a harvest. Hunger is robbing people of their health, potential and in many cases, their lives. Alaya's family, pictured, live in a one-roomed grass thatched hut. They survive on one meal a day that often includes leaves. They go hungry 11 months of the year. She fears one of her children may die from hunger. No one should have to live this way.
Alaya and Bazwell are maize farmers, but because of changing weather patterns, they have struggled increasingly to produce any food from their small plot of land. They try to find work at nearby farms, but work is scarce and low paid. Their family is now barely surviving to such an extent that Alaya and Bazwell will often go without so there's food for the children.
The good news is there's so much we can do to support parents like Alaya. This Christmas, you can be a big part of that. Tearfund is working with a local church partner to transform Alaya's village. Through planting trees, introducing new farming techniques and seeds to withstand the changing weather, change will come, with your help.
£151 could pay for 23 trees to be planted in a village like Alayas to help prevent dangerous flooding that is washing away crops and leading to widespread hunger.
£306 could provide enough weather-proof maize seeds so that 35 people like Alaya can feed their children even in the harshest conditions.
